I started this artwork in early 90s, inspired by Tolkien’s writings and brothers’ Hildebrandt illustrations. It was Arwen in Rivendell, a beautiful immortal soul contemplating becoming mortal and living among people. It also echoed a story of Linandara I have been writing then, a woman who left a care free existence in a paradise-like environment to experience true human life with love, heartbreak, business, pain and, eventually, death.
I have only refined the details and added a scull/death mask on the mountain side recently. Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end.
Is it worth it? Having all those human experiences, good and bad? Now I look at this picture again with a new eyes, and a bit more experience, and yes, real life is worth it, I would choose it again and again…
Soft pastel, ink, pencils on brown card, varnished. Please frame under glass.
